TORONTO, ON - February 15, 2024 - Beer Canada welcomes the unanimous motion passed today by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) to reduce a scheduled 4.7% inflation-based indexing of beer, wine and spirits taxes effective on April 1, 2024 with a lower 2% increase, in line with the Bank of Canada’s CPI mid-range target.
The motion moved by Conservative MP for Calgary Forest Lawn, Jasraj Singh Hallan and amended by NDP MP for Elmwood-Transcona, Daniel Blaikie, received the support of all Liberal, Conservative, NDP and Bloc Québécois members of FINA.
We now call for a concurrence debate in the full House of Commons on the motion so that all Members of Parliament may have their voice heard on this important issue to Canadian beer lovers, as well as to all those who brew, distribute, retail, pour or serve it.
