Toronto - March 27, 2023 - Beer Canada will be available for comment immediately following the tabling of the Federal Budget in the House of Commons on March 28, 2023. President CJ Hélie will participate in the stakeholder lock-up in Ottawa and will be accessible for interviews.
A broad consensus representing brewers, barley farmers, maltsters, restaurateurs, brewery unions, retailers, chambers of commerce, consumer groups, tourism associations as well as the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance recommended the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland stop the 6.3% April 1st automatic inflation indexed beer tax hike and freeze federal beer taxes until inflation returns to the Bank of Canada’s 1%t top 3% target range.
Budget 2023 is an opportunity for the Liberal Government to tackle Canadians’ number one priority of cost-of-living challenges and do everything possible to curb inflation.
“Faced with already very high tax rates, increased operating costs and depressed sales volumes, yet another federal beer tax increase would feel like a punch in the gut for many brewers and those dependent on beer sales within the broader hospitality and tourism sector,”said CJ Hélie, President of Beer Canada.
